21: PLAYERUNKNOWN’S BATTLEGROUNDS DIVIDES US

The one where Jase and Joe bring two different opinions on PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds. Also, Jase chats about finishing Zelda and having spent well over a week’s playing time in the world and we discuss the SNES Classic, remasters versus remakes, Sega Forever, Aussies getting ripped off with Metroid: Samus Returns, franchises we’d love to see in Rocket League, game curation and other games we’ve been playing (which of course includes Halo of some description).

TWO NEW PODCASTS UP!

Double the podcast goodness Normally here at VERSUS PLAYER we podcast once a fortnight, but we've broken the trend this past fortnight and gone two for two. In Episode 13: Joe's Sacrifice, we chat a about a bit of Shovel Knight, A King’s Tale, Zelda and Horizon plus XCOM 2. Also, Joe dies and Jase is finally at peace. It's the one that's a bit all over the shop. In Episode 14: Old is New, we discuss the old days and games on the tip of our joystick. Joe almost dies again by choking on a snake and Jono is afraid of giant ants. Like always, feel free to write in to podcast@www.versusplayer.com to have your question read out and discussed on the show. BREATH OF THE WILD METACRITIC (updated)

*Update to original Breath of the Wild Metacritic article: The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild Metacritic score has dropped by 1 point since this article was originally published. With 90 critic reviews, 3 being mixed, one score of 84, the rest 90 or above, with 56 of those giving the game a perfect score, there is no doubting this game has really struck a cord with gamers. This includes our very own Jase. You can check out his impressions on Breath of the Wild here. *Original article follows: Has one of the best games of all time just been released? Have you seen the Breath of the Wild Metacritic score? The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is, at the time of writing this, the second highest ranked game of all time on Metacritic with an aggregated score of 98. It's equal with Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 and GTA 4 and only 1 point behind the highest ever ranked game on Metacritic, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Interestingly, the user scores tell a very different story. Breath of the Wild only has a combined user score of 7.8. We all know to take this with a grain of salt, although some of the negative anti-Nintendo and pro-Horizon Zero Dawn user reviews are hilarious and worth a read. Hear us chat about Breath of the Wild Metacritic score and more Do you agree that…

NINTENDO SWITCH LAUNCH GAMES

1-2 (3-4-5 and the) Switch On our latest podcast, Nintendo Switch It Up, we spoke about the Nintendo Switch launch and some of the games that were spoken of at the Nintendo Switch Presentation. In one part of the podcast, Jono read through a list of games that Nintendo have said are coming at launch. We thought we'd pop up the the infographic from the Nintendo website for you, so here it is: Some missing from the list EB Games have other games listed in their coming soon sections for 2017, including Lego City Undercover, Minecraft Story Mode, Yooka-Laylee and Fire Emblem: Warriors. Surely there are more to come There are a whole heap of games that are on the horizon for the Switch. We don't know a great deal about what will be coming to the digital service, particularly what specific older titles will be released on the Switch's version of Virtual Console. For more details on some of the games listed here, check out our coverage on the Nintendo Switch Presentation or listen to our Nintendo Switch It Up podcast. We will be anxiously awaiting the launch of the Switch here at VERSUS PLAYER. We'll be discussing our impressions on our podcast once it's released, so stay tuned! What do you think of this line-up? THE GAMESMEN RETRO VIDEO GAME MUSEUM

The Gamesmen is worth a trip for Sydney folk If you are at all interested in retro gaming and live in the Sydney area, then a trip to The Gamesmen in Penshurst is worth your time. While the museum space is about the size of an average EB games, it's packed to the brim. There are retro game consoles, other hardware, games and store displays. You can see pictures of parts of the collection above. We headed out to The Gamesmen the other day and spent about 40 minutes looking through the museum collection and reminiscing over the many games on display. There is also a large video game store, which is probably the draw-card for the locals. The prices are about standard, but there are many products in the main store that you will be hard pressed to find anywhere else. These include fight sticks, controllers for simulation games, retro inspired (rip off) PC and Mac controllers, board games, plushies and a whole lot more. Check out their website for opening hours and store details. If you like gaming from all eras, then you might like our VERSUS PLAYER podcast. We talk about the new and old, with many a story to be told (no more rhymes now, I mean it). Happy gaming!

NINTENDO SWITCH PRESENTATION 2017 HIGHLIGHTS

Zelda: Breath of the Wild is a launch game! Nintendo just held the long awaited Nintendo Switch Presentation 2017, which was streamed live from Tokyo. It was a presentation that aimed to, and delivered in, providing a detailed introduction to Nintendo Switch hardware and software. There was more details on a lot of information we've seen before, including how the controllers work, the different ways you can play, the features of the unit and multiplayer gaming with the detachable controllers, which we now know are called Joy-Con. Here are my personal highlights of the presentation. https://youtu.be/zw47_q9wbBE Launch information The Nintendo Switch will be available on March 3 2017 in Japan, US, Canada, Hong Kong and other territories at a suggested retail price - USD$299.99 (approx AUD$400... but we'll probably get ripped off like we tend to always do). They said that "generally" they will not apply region locking to Nintendo Switch software. Here's hoping "generally" means they just won't, but we'll have to wait and see. This could have been just a translation difference. As for online, you'll be able to invite friends, set play appointments and chat online via your Smart device. Online on the Nintendo Switch will be free initially, then it will become a paid service (more info to come at a later date). How we got here In one…

BEST OF THE WEB: SUPER MARIO BROS CROSSOVER

Super Mario Bros Remix Super Mario Bros Crossover is a fan made flash game that allows you to play stages from the NES version of Super Mario Bros as characters from different Nintendo games. It has been around since 2010, but if you haven't played it since then you would be surprised by the incredible amount of inclusions that have been added. To say a lot of love has gone into this game is an understatement. Every element has been considered and the recreation and fitting in of these characters has been done masterfully. You can play the game here. Character Variety On the character selection screen you can choose to play as 10 different classic Nintendo characters, including Link, Samus, Simon Belmont and Mega Man. Clicking on any of these 10 characters will then allow you to select a whole gamut of versions of these characters and completely new ones, from Princess Peach to Tetris blocks! The amount of Mario and Mega Man versions alone would be enough. And these characters aren't just reskinnings of Mario either. They each behave like their versions in their own games, with Kid Icarus shooting arrows and Ryu Hayabusa able to climb walls and throw ninja stars. Then there is the fact that with each character the background music changes to their theme. Seriously. But wait, there's…

BEST OF THE WEB: JAMES FARR

Super Smash Bros meets pop culture James Farr makes incredibly stylish YouTube videos that cross Nintendo characters with pop culture franchises. These include Star Wars, Ghostbusters, Back to the Future and TMNT. The style of the videos is done in a very Nintendo-ey vain that fits perfectly with the humour and action that the clips contain. You can find all of James Farr's YouTube videos here. My favourite of James Farr's clips is his retelling of the original Star Wars trilogy and The Triforce Awakenens!, which is, you guessed it, a mash-up of Zelda and The Force Awakens. https://youtu.be/jCIy0r9ICXU Here at VERSUS PLAYER we love everything nerdy and want to share with you some of our favourite things on the Internet. Best of the Web will be an ongoing series where we do exactly that. Happy gaming!

THE GAME AWARDS HIGHLIGHTS 2016

HIGHLIGHTS FOR THIS YEARS GAME AWARDS Another year, another Game Awards come and gone. While you can watch the whole thing online if you like, I thought I'd do you all a solid and compile my highlights of the show (and to save you from having to watch the "music" performances... not talking about the Doom performance, that was boss!) Bulletstorm Full Clip Edition A remaster of the original, super fun Bulletstorm with all DLC and updates is on its way. While this alone is great, it’s the totally unexpected pre-order bonus that is the highlight here. Pre-order and you can play through the entire campaign as Duke Nukem, fully voiced by Jon St. John! Zelda Breath of the Wild – Most Anticipated Game While the gameplay video that was shown during the show was underwhelming, mainly due to the way it was presented, the preshow footage of Breath of the Wild was fantastic. Most Anticipated Game is quite the honour, what with Mass Effect looming, but this game has our interests piqued. Hideo in the House! Now while we all expected there to be a lot of love for Hideo Kojima at the show from his boy Jeff Keighley, the bromance was off the charts. Check out the video below, as words can’t describe. Oh, and the jabs at Konami were brutal. Death…
