E3 2018: NINTENDO DIRECT HIGHLIGHTS

I love me a Nintendo Direct. Keep on keeping on Nintendo. During the E3 2018 Nintendo Direct, lots was shown, with something for all Nintendo fans out there. In true Direct fashion, a few games were only given a little bit of time, with a deep dive into one. Check out the clips below: Daemon X Machina A super stylish trailer showing some heavy metal Transformers inspired (but let’s be real, it really is just Transformers) action. This one has Jono written all over it. https://youtu.be/cxPlBdk4HXY Xenoblades Chronicles 2: Torna - The Golden Country Looks like more of what fans of the series are after. Not my thing but you do you! I hope they do another edition of this game one day and further add to the title. https://youtu.be/-EP6XV1BmOk Pokemon Let’s Go Reggie showed off the game and chatted about it, including the Pokeball Plus. Super Mario Party Play with multiple Switch screens for some of the mini games. Hmmmm. I could use a second Switch. https://youtu.be/7pu9t5AL1Ss Fire Emblem: Three Houses A clip showing off story beats and game-play. Another that’s not my thing, but for those who are into the series, please to enjoy! https://youtu.be/rkux5h0PeXo Fortnite So do I need to say anything? It’s Fortnite. On Switch. Out now for free. I did chuckle at the "for free" business. I know…

21: PLAYERUNKNOWN’S BATTLEGROUNDS DIVIDES US

The one where Jase and Joe bring two different opinions on PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds. Also, Jase chats about finishing Zelda and having spent well over a week’s playing time in the world and we discuss the SNES Classic, remasters versus remakes, Sega Forever, Aussies getting ripped off with Metroid: Samus Returns, franchises we’d love to see in Rocket League, game curation and other games we’ve been playing (which of course includes Halo of some description).

PLAY THE RAYMAN SNES PROTOYPE DEMO HERE

A small slice of gaming history A few days ago, Omar Cornut uploaded a prototype demo for an unreleased Super Nintendo version of the first Rayman game. This is the same demo that Rayman creator Michel Ancel showed off on Instagram last October. https://twitter.com/ocornut/status/881876378056085505 Cornut got the prototype of the game off Ancel and kindly popped it on Dropbox for the world to enjoy. Now let's be clear here, there is not much to see and it'll take you longer to get everything started if you don't already have a SNES emulator than it will take you to play through the prototype. All you can do is walk, jump and do some weird thing with your arms on a very small part of a stage. Oh, and you can make your body flatten when you jump up against something. That all said, this sort of thing is really cool and something that retro loving gamers like us at VERSUS PLAYER love to see. You can download the Rayman SNES prototype demo by following the Dropbox link in the tweet above. To play the game you need a SNES emulator. I used SNES9x to play it. Happy gaming!

E3 2017: UBISOFT PRESS CONFERENCE HIGHLIGHTS

Mario at Ubi!? The Ubisoft E3 2017 Press Conference started with one of the most surprising intros to an E3 conference I can remember and a bunch of games that look cool. Really cool. Like, incredible! You have to give Ubisoft one thing, they make amazing trailers. Here are my highlights to the show, which, unfortunately, didn't include a "one more thing" moment that had Aisha Tyler walking on stage. You can't have everything. Seriously though, this Press Conference really had something for everyone. Well done Ubisoft! Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle A Rabbid hitting a Mario question mark block, then eating a mushroom. Right there was surprising enough, but then for the man himself, Shigeru Miyamoto, to walk on stage and talk about the game!?! Oh, then gameplay and it looks as beautiful as you'd hope a 3D Mario game to look! THEN, it plays like XCOM!? With all the humour you'd expect from a Rabbids game. And Princess Peach rescuing herself!? Only at E3. Unbelievable! https://youtu.be/mUI8CttQEHw Assassin's Creed Origins More Origins, with a trailer showing off some impressive animal animations then an extended offscreen gameplay video running on Xbox One X. https://youtu.be/YfaSihDY5wk The Crew 2 Now I want a game with the Inception homage shown in the trailer to actual extend to gameplay. While The Crew 2 isn't this game, the trailer is worth checking…

GAMING WITH THE KIDS: SUPER MARIO MAKER

Let your kids relive your childhood with Super Mario Maker It's a common dream among older gamers to take their kids through gaming history by introducing them to the classics. I've even heard of some parents starting their kids on older consoles and slowly moving up through history one gem at a time. While this sounds like a cool idea, the reality is that once your kids get a taste of the wonders of modern games, many of the classics are really hard to go back to. That said, there are heaps of games that stand the test of time, particularly those where the brilliance lies in the gameplay. The 2D Mario games are perfect examples of this. I highly recommend playing through Super Mario Bros and Super Mario World with your little ones. Bros to show them the brilliance of the original and World as it is gaming perfection. A few years ago I handed my son a SNES controller and we played World together and loved every minute. The stuff of dreams Super Mario Maker for the Wii U and 3DS (and surely eventually the Switch) is a build-it-yourself approach to the Mario franchise, everything we dreamed of when we were kids. The Super Mario Maker games come with already built stages and the ability to play the creations of others (although this is a far simpler and more user-friendly process on…

BREATH OF THE WILD METACRITIC (updated)

*Update to original Breath of the Wild Metacritic article: The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild Metacritic score has dropped by 1 point since this article was originally published. With 90 critic reviews, 3 being mixed, one score of 84, the rest 90 or above, with 56 of those giving the game a perfect score, there is no doubting this game has really struck a cord with gamers. This includes our very own Jase. You can check out his impressions on Breath of the Wild here. *Original article follows: Has one of the best games of all time just been released? Have you seen the Breath of the Wild Metacritic score? The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is, at the time of writing this, the second highest ranked game of all time on Metacritic with an aggregated score of 98. It's equal with Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 and GTA 4 and only 1 point behind the highest ever ranked game on Metacritic, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Interestingly, the user scores tell a very different story. Breath of the Wild only has a combined user score of 7.8. We all know to take this with a grain of salt, although some of the negative anti-Nintendo and pro-Horizon Zero Dawn user reviews are hilarious and worth a read. Hear us chat about Breath of the Wild Metacritic score and more Do you agree that…
