GAMES ON THE CHEAP: MAY 2017

Games with Gold, PlayStation Plus, Humble Bundle and more GAMES ON THE CHEAP has some pretty sweet picks for May 2017. The standout of this solid list is my 2014 Game of the Year, Tales from the Borderlands (as part of the PlayStation Plus PS4 lineup). If you've listened to our VERSUS PLAYER podcast you've heard me talk about the style, humour and fun story that had me hooked the whole way through. I can't recommend this game enough. And no, you don't need to have played the Borderlands games before. Getting the incredible INSIDE (one of my top three games of last year) as part of Humble Monthly is a nice get too. Then there is the whole Xbox Games with Gold lineup. Great games all round, with LEGO Star Wars: The Complete Saga being a fun game to play with your kids (check out our GAMING WITH THE KIDS: LEGO VIDEO GAMES article here). Check out the full list below. Here are the GAMES ON THE CHEAP for May 2017 Xbox Games With Gold Out from the 1st Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II – Xbox 360 Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams - Director's Cut – Xbox One Out from the 16th LEGO Star Wars: The Complete Saga – Xbox 360 Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris – Xbox One https://youtu.be/DDpW_HSu45g PlayStation Plus Tales from the Borderlands - PS4 Abzu - PS4 Laser Disco Defenders…

TOO MUCH OF A GOOD THING

How the length of Persona 5 is turning me away If you have followed VERSUS PLAYER at all, you know we are all about balancing games with life and everything in-between. We've discussed game length plenty of times on our VERSUS PLAYER podcasts and the way we play games. I'm more of a main story completionist rather than a collect everything and delve into multiplayer for weeks kind of player. I fully expect a role playing game to take upwards of 25 hours to complete (I've recently spent about 42 hours playing through Final Fantasy XV). 100 plus hours to complete Persona 5 on the other hand is really well above the upper limit for a gamer like me. Let me start by saying I am absolutely LOVING my time with Persona 5. I was fortunate enough to pick up the game early and have been playing for a few hours pretty much every night since I got it. The characters are interesting, the story intriguing, the systems deep, the animated cutscenes are fantastic and the combat fun. Above all though, what I love most about the game is its style. Even the loading screens are cool. Value for money If you can spend $1 for an hour of enjoyment, that's fantastic value in my book. With a game as high quality as Persona 5, it's incredible that there is just so much…

DICE AWARDS 2017 WINNERS

The DICE Awards 2017 (for games from 2016) were held on the 23rd February at the The Mandalay Bay Convention Center in Las Vegas. The Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences (AIAS) celebrated their 20th year of the award show. Since 1996, the D.I.C.E. Awards have recognized games, individuals and development teams that have contributed to the advancement of the multi-billion dollar worldwide entertainment software industry. The D.I.C.E. Awards are the most credible, respected and recognized awards for the interactive entertainment community with voting cast by members of the Academy’s 33,000+ membership base. The voting process is supervised and certified by Votenet Solutions, Inc. interactive.org The show was hosted by Greg Miller and Jessica Chobot. They did a good job, although were underutilized and given no favours by the poor crowd responses (or maybe just an audio issue). There was hardly a laugh heard from the audience in the opening address, which had some really funny moments to it. The DICE Awards 2017 started off with an incredible diorama created by Noodle House. Besides this opening though, the whole show was less flashy than The Game Awards, so you might prefer just to check out the winners below. Now most of the awards were not a surprise, with Overwatch taking home yet again another Game of the Year award, racing gaming going to Forza Horizon 3, Uncharted 4…

IGN SELECT AWARDS 2016

More than just an awards show On Friday 3rd February, we had the chance to go to the IGN Select Awards 2016 at the International Convention Centre, Darling Harbour (Sydney, Australia). At the IGN Select Awards 2016, attendees had the chance to play many of the nominated games. These included Doom, Uncharted 4, Inside, Call of Duty and more. There were also a few unreleased titles, the most well known of the lot being For Honor and the new Tekken. There were also a bunch of unreleased indie games. This is where we found our next Overcooked, the aptly titled Think of the Children. Besides the awesome company, playing this gem of a game was our highlight of the IGN Select Awards 2016.  And the Winner Is... https://youtu.be/3qGgvQeVqwA Best Visual Design: Uncharted 4 Best Audio: Battlefield 1 Best Game Design: Overwatch Best Storytelling: Uncharted 4 Best Online: Overwatch Best Original Game: Overwatch IGN Editors Choice: Forza Horizon 3 Game of the Year: Uncharted 4 You can listen to us talk about the IGN Select Awards 2016 on our latest podcast, IGN Select Awards and RTX Sydney Weekend.
