The Game Awards Highlights 2016

HIGHLIGHTS FOR THIS YEARS GAME AWARDS
Another year, another Game Awards come and gone. While you can watch the whole thing online if you like, I thought I’d do you all a solid and compile my highlights of the show (and to save you from having to watch the “music” performances… not talking about the Doom performance, that was boss!)
Bulletstorm Full Clip Edition
A remaster of the original, super fun Bulletstorm with all DLC and updates is on its way. While this alone is great, it’s the totally unexpected pre-order bonus that is the highlight here. Pre-order and you can play through the entire campaign as Duke Nukem, fully voiced by Jon St. John!
Zelda Breath of the Wild – Most Anticipated Game
While the gameplay video that was shown during the show was underwhelming, mainly due to the way it was presented, the preshow footage of Breath of the Wild was fantastic. Most Anticipated Game is quite the honour, what with Mass Effect looming, but this game has our interests piqued.
Hideo in the House!
Now while we all expected there to be a lot of love for Hideo Kojima at the show from his boy Jeff Keighley, the bromance was off the charts. Check out the video below, as words can’t describe. Oh, and the jabs at Konami were brutal.
Death Stranding Trailer with Mads Mikkelsen
I’m not sure what I saw, but I know I liked it. I liked it a lot.
Guardians of the Galaxy Telltale Game Teaser
The rumours are true. Guardians game coming from the storytelling masters at Telltale. I’m there.
That Dragon, Cancer – Ryan Green’s Games for Impact Acceptance Speech
I’m sure this was a game that the creators wish they never made. This acceptance speech was so heartfelt and beautiful. This and the Boogie2988 acceptance speech for Trending Gamer remind us how games can be so much more than just a form of entertainment.
Prey Trailer
WATCH. THIS. NOW.
Shovel Knight: Spectre of Torment Trailer
A prequel (sequel) to Shovel Knight is on its way, retaining the look of the original.
Halo Wars 1 & 2
Now I’m not a fan of preorders and I really try and steer clear of them in my own small protest of the practise, but how can I miss picking up Halo Wars Definitive Edition as part of a preorder of Halo Wars 2. The fact that I get to play it on December 20, two months before the sequel, is too much to pass on.
Live Doom Soundtrack Performance
Aussie Mick Gordon, the composer of the brilliant Doom (2016… the 1993 original is brilliant too btw), gave us the one musical performance of the night that you have to watch.
Mass Effect Andromeda Footage
This has all of us at Versus Player drooling.
The Best of the Rest
The full list of winners can be seen over at Polygon, with only a few surprises (it was really nice to see Nolan North receive the Best Performance award).
Check out the Versus Player podcast over on iTunes. We’ll be discussing The Game Awards and a lot more on episode 4.
